“Assignment: Outer Space (Space Men)” is an Italian film production direct by Antonio Margheriti and acquired for US distribution by Samuel Z Arkoff.
One of the stars of the film was dancer Archie Savage (1914-2003), who played the role of Space Engineer "AL." A role oddly similar to Idris Elba's Character, Janek, in Prometheus (2012), his role being limited to staying on board of the ship.
Archie Savage made a vital contribution to African-American Dance in the United States. Born in Norfolk, Virginia and raised in New York's Harlem. Archie's first introduction to the world of modern dance came when he joined the "Hemsley Winfield's Dance Troupe" in the 1930's. In 1939, Archie joined the "Katherine Dunham Dance Troupe" and later was a part of a nationwide stage production of "Cabin in the Sky".
He became Ms. Dunham's dance partner and also helped create what is known as the "Afro/Cuban" dance form. He has appeared in 23 films here and abroad and 6 Broadway stage Productions including the original South Pacific.
Archie was a pioneer of the African-American Dance History. His legacy will live on and he will always be remembered for the contribution he made to the world of dance.
